Re:New review slated for proposed highway
January 26, 2005 edition
I must take exception to the opinions of some reported in the story
that the need for the Mid Peninsula Highway, now renamed the Niagara
/ GTA Corridor, has already been proven in the original needs assessment.
As a member of Citizens Opposed to Paving the Escarpment, I read hundreds
of pages of information on the highway proposal, including the original
needs assessment. What was truly alarming was the assumption stated
up front that a highway would be built and the lack of consideration
given to any other options. The desire to build a highway was evident.
An actual need for it was never shown.
The Liberal government's commitment to complete a full environmental
assessment for the Mid Peninsula Highway / Niagara - GTA Corridor, is
grounds for cautious optimism. Let's hope we're on the track to making
wiser decisions based on consideration for all options and ramifications;
not old, outdated habits.
Sincerely,
