During the past provincial election, COPE worked to obtain the promise from the Liberal Government to complete a full environmental assessment for the Mid-Peninsula Highway.  The Premier and the Minister of Transportation stated their commitment to completing a full environmental assessment.

The Mid Peninsula Highway has since been reworked into the Niagara to GTA Corridor and is represented in both the province’s Greenbelt Protection Plan / Act as well as the Places to Grow plan. 

The Ministry of Transportation recently released the draft Environmental Assessment Terms of Reference for the Niagara to GTA Corridor.  COPE is currently reviewing the document and will post our comments upon completion.  We will continue to ensure that a full environmental assessment is completed.  This includes determining actual need for a transportation corridor and considering ALL OPTIONS such as rail, marine and public transit). 

The MTO’s draft Environmental Assessment Terms of Reference for the Niagara to GTA Corridor can be viewed at:  www.niagara-gta.com. 

The government is accepting comments on the Terms of Reference until May 6, 2005. 

Please contact the Premier and Minister of Transportation to tell them that COPE members remain vigilant in ensuring a full environmental assessment is completed for the Niagara to GTA Corridor – formerly known as the Mid-Peninsula Highway.
